But that does not automatically mean Walmart Marketplace is expensive.

Unlike marketplaces that charge sellers a recurring selling plan fee, Walmart Marketplace has no standard setup or monthly subscription fee. Instead, most costs begin when you make a sale or choose additional services such as Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) or advertising.

The tricky part is what happens after that.

Referral fees change by product category and price. WFS fees change with weight and dimensions. Storage gets more expensive when inventory sits too long. Returns can create another fulfillment expense. Even a product priced below $10 can trigger an additional WFS charge.

So, how much does it really cost to sell on Walmart Marketplace in 2026? Let’s break down every important fee and, more importantly, what each one does to your profit.

What Fees Do Walmart Sellers Pay in 2026?

Walmart does not charge sellers a standard account setup fee or monthly Marketplace subscription. But once you start selling, several fees can come into play depending on your category, fulfillment method, inventory and advertising strategy.

Not every seller pays every fee. The main Walmart Marketplace costs to know are:

Referral Fees: Walmart’s commission on each completed sale, based on product category and, in some cases, selling price.

WFS Fulfillment Fees: Charged when Walmart Fulfillment Services picks, packs and ships your orders.

WFS Storage Fees: Charged for inventory stored inside Walmart fulfillment centers.

WFS Return Processing Fees: May apply to certain customer returns, particularly when the return is considered seller-at-fault.

WFS Prep Fees: Apply when Walmart provides services such as item labeling or poly bagging.

Inventory Transfer Services Fees: May apply when Walmart redistributes WFS inventory across fulfillment centers.

Removal and Disposal Fees: Charged when inventory needs to be removed from or disposed of through WFS.

Walmart Advertising Costs: Optional costs from Sponsored Search and other Walmart advertising campaigns.

Payout Provider Fees: May apply when a seller uses certain third-party payment providers.

What Is a Walmart Marketplace Referral Fee?

The referral fee is Walmart’s commission for a product sold through Marketplace.

Walmart calculates it as a percentage of the product’s gross sales based on the contract category or product type assigned during item setup. Sellers can see the assigned contract category and commission rate on their Statements page in Seller Center.

Referral Fees Are Not Always Calculated on the Item Price Alone

Walmart defines the total sales price as including:

Item price + shipping and handling + gift wrap + other applicable charges

So if you sell a product for $40 and separately charge $5 for shipping, you should not automatically calculate the referral fee on $40. That small distinction becomes much more important as order volume grows.

Walmart Marketplace Referral Fee Rates for 2026

Here is Walmart’s current contract-category fee structure.

Product Category

Referral Fee

Apparel & Accessories

5% at $15 or less; 10% between $15 and $20; 15% above $20

Appliances – Compact

12% on portion up to $300; 8% on portion above $300

Appliances – Major

8%

Automotive & Powersports

12%

Baby Products

8% at $10 or less; 15% above $10

Base Power Tools

12%

Beauty, Health & Personal Care

8% at $10 or less; 15% above $10

Books

15%

Camera & Photo

8%

Collectibles – Approved Sellers

Special tiered rates for certain collectible categories

Consumer Electronics

8%

Electronics Accessories

15% on portion up to $100; 8% on portion above $100

Grocery

8% at $15 or less; 15% above $15

Home, Kitchen, Decor & Garden

15%

Indoor & Outdoor Furniture

15% on portion up to $200; 10% on portion above $200

Industrial & Scientific Supplies

12%

Jewelry & Precious Metals

20% on portion up to $250; 5% on portion above $250

Luggage & Travel Accessories

15%

Music

15%

Musical Instruments

12%

Office Products

15%; printer cartridges 12%

Outdoor Power Tools

15% at $500 or less; 8% above $500

Outdoors Products & Sports

15%; certain optics and hunting monitors 8%

Personal Computers

6%

Pet Supplies

15%

Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Ventilation

10%

Shoes, Handbags, Backpacks & Sunglasses

15%

Software & Computer Video Games

15%

Tires & Wheels

10%

Tools & Home Improvement

15%

Toys & Games

15%

Video & DVD

15%

Video Game Consoles

8%

Watches

15% on portion up to $1,500; 3% on portion above $1,500

For approved collectibles, Walmart currently charges 8% on the portion up to $2,500 and 2.35% on the portion above $2,500 for specified categories including trading cards, trading card games, comics, coins, autographed collectibles and collectible ephemera. Other collectible categories remain at 8%.

This is why a blanket statement such as ‘Walmart takes 15%’ can lead to bad profitability forecasts.

How Tiered Walmart Referral Fees Work

This is one of the easiest areas to misunderstand.

Suppose you sell a $150 electronics accessory. Walmart charges:

15% on the first $100 = $15

8% on the remaining $50 = $4

Total referral fee = $19

Not $22.50.

That gives the order an effective referral rate of about 12.67%, even though part of the product price falls inside a 15% tier. Walmart’s schedule specifically applies different rates to portions of the selling price for Electronics Accessories.

What About a $1,000 Jewelry Item?

Jewelry & Precious Metals uses another split:

20% × $250 = $50

5% × $750 = $37.50

Total referral fee = $87.50

That is an effective fee of 8.75%.

This is why sellers should build profitability calculations using the actual Walmart category logic instead of simply entering “15% Marketplace fee” into every spreadsheet.

Where Can You Find Your Actual Walmart Referral Fee?

You do not have to guess. Additional charges can apply depending on price, product type and dimensions.

Why Dimensional Weight Can Change Your WFS Fee

A light product is not always a cheap product to fulfill.

For units under one pound, Walmart uses unit weight. For products between one and 150 pounds, Walmart compares actual unit weight with dimensional weight and uses whichever is greater.

The dimensional weight formula is: Dimensional Weight = Length × Width × Height ÷ 139

Walmart then adds 0.25 lb for packaging and rounds the final shipping weight up to the nearest pound.

Imagine a product weighs only 6 lb but measures: 12 × 10 × 10 inches. Its dimensional weight is: 1,200 ÷ 139 = 8.63 lb. Add 0.25 lb for packaging: 8.63 + 0.25 = 8.88 lb. Rounded shipping weight: 9 lb

The WFS fulfillment fee becomes: $5.75 + ($0.40 × 5) = $7.75

So although the physical product weighs 6 lb, Walmart prices fulfillment at 9 lb because the package occupies more shipping space. The same dimensional weight methodology is used in Walmart’s WFS pricing rules.

WFS Additional Fulfillment Fees Sellers Should Know

Standard fulfillment pricing is only the beginning. The higher oversize level applies at larger dimensional thresholds and also causes the unit to be priced starting at the 90 lb rate.

That makes measurement errors expensive.

The Under-$10 WFS Problem

Suppose your product sells for $9.99, weighs no more than 1 pound and sits in a category with an 8% referral fee.

Referral fee: $9.99 × 8% = approximately $0.80

Standard WFS fulfillment: $3.45

Under-$10 WFS addition: $1.00

If the product itself costs $2.50, you are already at:

$9.99 – $0.80 – $3.45 – $1.00 – $2.50 = $2.24

And that is before storage, inbound freight, advertising, returns, software, duties or overhead.

Walmart’s current WFS schedule specifically adds $1 to standard items priced below $10. Across 20,000 units, it becomes $4,000.

What Is Walmart Inventory Transfer Services?

When creating a WFS shipment, sellers may be asked to distribute inventory across several fulfillment centers.

Walmart’s Inventory Transfer Services, or ITS, can allow sellers to send eligible inventory to a single location and have Walmart redistribute it to designated fulfillment centers for an additional fee.

The important calculation is not simply: Does ITS cost money? It is: Does the ITS fee cost less than splitting and transporting inbound inventory myself?

The answer can change with shipment size, warehouse location and freight rates, so this is one place where the current WFS estimator and shipment plan should be used rather than relying on a fixed generic assumption.

Walmart WFS Return Processing Fees

Returns are where a profitable looking SKU can quietly lose margin.

For WFS orders, Walmart bases the standard return processing fee on shipping weight, using the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight.

Return Shipping Weight

Standard Return Processing Fee

1 lb or less

$4.70

2 lb

$6.20

3 lb

$6.70

4–20 lb

$7.00 + $0.40/lb above 4

21–30 lb

$15.55 + $0.40/lb above 21

31–50 lb

$14.55 + $0.40/lb above 31

51 lb or more

$17.55 + $0.40/lb above 51

Big & bulky

$155 + $0.80/lb above 90

Apparel, hazardous-material and oversize additions can also apply. But the reason for the return matters too.

When Does Walmart Pay the WFS Return Fee?

Walmart says it waives the return processing charge when the return is identified as Walmart at fault, including circumstances such as an item lost in transit, shipping damage, late arrival or the wrong item being received.

When the seller is responsible, for example because the item does not match the description, has missing parts, poor fit, compatibility problems or certain other customer-reported product issues, the seller may pay the return processing charge.

For a seller-at-fault WFS return, Walmart says the sale is reversed, the referral fee is credited, but the original fulfillment fee is retained. Removal or disposal fees may also apply if returned inventory is unsellable or affected by the seller’s return preferences.

That makes listing quality a financial issue.

WFS Removal and Disposal Fees

Inventory does not disappear for free when you no longer want it stored at Walmart. Current WFS removal and disposal rates include:

Unit Weight

Disposal

Removal

2 lb or less

$0.35/unit

Disposal fee + $0.40/lb shipping

3–500 lb

$0.35 + $0.20/lb above 2

Disposal fee + $0.40/lb shipping

Hazardous-material inventory receives an additional $0.50 base charge.

Again, inventory planning becomes part of profitability. The best time to deal with dead stock is usually before it has accumulated months of storage charges and another fee to remove it.

What Does Seller Fulfilled Walmart Cost?

WFS is not the only way to fulfill Walmart orders. Walmart Marketplace sellers can use WFS or qualifying seller-controlled fulfillment infrastructure.

When you fulfill orders yourself, the WFS fulfillment and storage tables no longer determine your cost. But fulfillment is not suddenly free.

Your own economics may include warehouse labor, packaging, postage or carrier charges, 3PL fees, returns processing, customer-service operations, order-management software and inventory carrying costs.

So comparing WFS with seller fulfillment should never look like: WFS fee vs $0. It should look like: WFS total cost vs your true in-house/3PL cost per order

A $5 WFS charge may be expensive for one seller and a bargain for another.

Walmart Marketplace Fees vs Amazon Fees

For sellers already operating on Amazon, Walmart’s pricing model feels familiar, but it is not identical.

Fee Area

Walmart Marketplace

Amazon US

Standard account setup fee

$0

$0

Recurring seller plan

No standard monthly Marketplace subscription

Professional: $39.99/month

Low-volume seller option

No equivalent standard subscription structure

Individual: $0.99/item sold

Referral fees

Category-based

Category-based

Marketplace fulfillment

WFS optional

FBA optional

Advertising

Optional

Optional

Storage

Applies with WFS

Applies with FBA

Amazon currently lists its Professional plan at $39.99 per month and Individual plan at $0.99 per item sold, with referral fees and optional FBA or advertising costs on top. Walmart, by contrast, does not charge a standard Marketplace monthly subscription.

But that does not mean Walmart will automatically be cheaper for every SKU. A large WFS product with dimensional weight, long storage and high returns can still be expensive.

How to Reduce Walmart Marketplace Fees in 2026

You cannot avoid every Walmart fee, but you can control many of the costs that affect your margin.

Use New-Seller Savings: Eligible sellers can receive 20%, 30% or 40% referral-fee discounts at different GMV levels, plus qualifying WFS and advertising savings.

Earn Pro Listing Discounts: Qualified Advanced Sellers can receive 5% off referral fees, while Pro Sellers can receive 10% off eligible Pro Listing referral fees.

Check Reduced Referral Fee Incentives: Some eligible items can receive lower referral fees when sellers meet Walmart’s pricing requirements.

Reduce Dimensional Weight: Smaller, more efficient packaging can lower the shipping weight used to calculate WFS fulfillment fees.

Watch the $10 WFS Threshold: Standard WFS products priced below $10 can face an additional $1 fulfillment charge.

Keep Inventory Moving: Monitor stock levels and avoid ageing inventory that can trigger higher storage fees.

Reduce Avoidable Returns: Accurate dimensions, compatibility, materials and product details can help reduce seller-at-fault returns.

Audit Your Contract Category: Make sure Walmart has assigned the correct category so you are not paying a higher referral fee than necessary.

Common Walmart Marketplace Fee Mistakes

Assuming every product pays 15%: Categories can use 6%, 8%, 10%, 12%, 15%, 20% or tiered combinations under the current contract schedule.

Calculating referral fees using only the product price: Walmart’s total sales price can also include shipping, handling, gift wrap and other charges.

Misunderstanding tiered rates: A $150 electronics accessory does not simply pay 15% on all $150 under Walmart’s current tier structure.

Using actual weight but ignoring dimensional weight: WFS can price eligible shipments using the greater of unit or dimensional weight.

Forgetting the 0.25 lb packaging addition: That small amount can push a product into another rounded shipping weight.

Ignoring the under-$10 WFS surcharge: Low-priced units can receive an extra $1 fulfillment charge.

Treating WFS storage as one flat rate forever: Inventory age and time of year affect Walmart’s published storage structure.

Assuming returns simply cancel the original sale: Seller-at-fault WFS returns can leave the seller responsible for return processing while Walmart retains the original fulfillment fee.

Forgetting prep, removal and disposal costs: Individually small charges can become substantial at scale.

Calculating profit before advertising, inbound freight, and COGS: Those may not all be Walmart platform fees, but they still leave the same bank account.

Frequently asked Questions

Q1. Is it free to sell on Walmart Marketplace?

Walmart does not charge a standard setup or monthly Marketplace subscription fee. Sellers pay referral fees when products sell, while optional or conditional services such as WFS and advertising create additional costs.

Q2. What percentage does Walmart take from sellers?

The percentage depends on the product’s assigned contract category and, in several categories, its selling price. Walmart often describes Marketplace rates as falling between 6% and 15%, but the detailed contract schedule contains special tiered rates outside that headline range.

Q3. Does Walmart charge a monthly seller fee?

No standard monthly Marketplace subscription fee is currently listed by Walmart.

Q4. What is a Walmart referral fee?

It is the commission Walmart deducts from gross sales after a Marketplace product is sold. The rate is based on the item’s Walmart-assigned contract category.

Q5. Is Walmart’s referral fee calculated on shipping too?

Walmart states that total sales price includes the product price plus shipping and handling, gift wrap and other charges.

Q6. How much does Walmart Fulfillment Services cost?

Standard WFS fulfillment currently begins at $3.45 for units weighing one pound or less, with higher fees based on shipping weight. Apparel, hazmat, products priced below $10 and oversize products can incur additional charges.

Q7. Is WFS required to sell on Walmart?

Sellers can use Walmart Fulfillment Services or operate through qualifying B2C fulfillment infrastructure, subject to Walmart’s Marketplace requirements.

Q8. Does Walmart charge storage fees?

Yes, if inventory is stored through WFS. Current standard storage starts at $0.75 per cubic foot per month, with different published treatment for peak-season and aged inventory.

Q9. What happens when a WFS customer returns a product?

The financial treatment depends on the reason for the return and inventory condition. Walmart can waive return processing when the issue is Walmart-at-fault. For seller-at-fault returns, sellers may pay return processing and Walmart may retain the original fulfillment fee even when the referral fee is credited.

Q10. Is Walmart cheaper than Amazon for sellers?

Walmart avoids the standard monthly seller subscription that Amazon charges for its Professional plan, but overall economics depend on referral rates, fulfillment, storage, returns, advertising and the individual SKU. Amazon currently charges $39.99 per month for its Professional selling plan or $0.99 per item under its Individual plan, plus applicable selling costs.

Build a Walmart Business Around Margin, Not Guesswork

Walmart Marketplace fees may look simple, but profitability depends on more than the referral rate.

Category, packaging, dimensional weight, WFS surcharges, storage age, returns and advertising can all change what you actually keep from each sale.

That is why fee calculations should happen before you order inventory, not after the payout arrives.

Ready to Build a More Profitable Walmart Strategy?

Selling more is useful.
